Skyhawks softball has ‘momentum and timing’

FLC sweeps Saturday’s pod and has won 9 of last 10

Nine wins in their last 10 games have head coach Kira Zeiter and the Fort Lewis College softball team feeling good.

The Skyhawks took down New Mexico Highlands 4-3 and CSU-Pueblo 8-2 on Saturday in Pueblo.

“A couple big keys to the day were timely hitting and doing the opposite to the other team, getting outs when they’re on the bases,” Zeiter said.

FLC (16-12, 12-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) tallied 13 hits in its victory over CSU-Pueblo (11-2, 8-4 RMAC).

Kaitlyn Bending and Myndee Thompson had two each, while Adriana Rosthenhausler and Thompson led the team with two runs batted in.

Destinee DeHerrera and Thompson both hit home runs in the game.

The Skyhawks and ThunderWolves were tied at one after the second inning, but FLC outscored CSU-Pueblo 7-1 after that.

“The whole team came up clutch,” Zeiter said. “I think softball’s a lot of that momentum and timing, and lately we’ve had a lot of momentum and timing.”

FLC has won its last six consecutive games to climb into fourth place in the RMAC standings.

The Skyhawks will continue pool play against CSU-Pueblo and N.M. Highlands starting at noon Sunday in Pueblo.

“We’ve got to keep our confidence high. The whole team feels good about the way we’re playing softball as a team and supporting each other,” Zeiter said. “We need to go out on that field and play the softball we know how to play.”
