Skyhawks start the clock running

FLC women’s lacrosse blows by Rockhurst

There are wins, and then there are pretty wins.

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team picked up a pretty 23-1 win against Rockhurst University on Monday at Ray Dennison Memorial field on FLC’s campus.

The Skyhawks picked up 17 assists on their 23 goals.

Ten different players scored and eight players assisted on goals in the game.

“That’s just the best feeling when you complete passes, when you connect on the field,” FLC junior Kathryn Dunn said. “I think we had some really pretty transitions today.”

Dunn tied for the team’s scoring lead with Ellie Carpenter at four goals.

Megan Longtain and Kylie Smith both scored three times.

Ally Kvidera and Jessica Norby led the team with four assists each.

“We had a lot of enthusiasm coming off of last game, and we wanted to show what we’re made of,” Dunn said.

FLC (4-1, 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost its first game of the season 10-8 against Mercy College in overtime Saturday, but the Skyhawks bounced back against Rockhurst (0-3, 0-2 RMAC) with 12 unanswered goals in the game’s first 25 minutes, 20 seconds.

A running clock began after FLC’s 10th goal with 19:23 left in the first half because the Skyhawks took a 10-goal lead.

It didn’t stop for the rest of the game, as Rockhurst never cut the deficit to single digits.

Rockhurst scored with 2:10 remaining when Andrea Heinemann found the back of the net assisted by Tierney Buschbacher.

The Skyhawks scored the game’s next 11 goals after that.

Eleven of FLC’s goals and 10 of its assists came from the bench.

“It’s hard in those type of games because we’re playing competition that’s different than what we experienced against Mercy because we had a lot of subs go in,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “They stepped up and got to play.”

Rockhurst was playing its third game in program history.

Getting that much rest should help the Skyhawks’ starters as they play six games in a stretch of 13 days.

That follows a 10-day break between games at the start of the stretch.

“Once we started scoring, I think it was 6-0, we said, ‘We’ve got to get our subs in so that we can stay fresh,’” MacDonald said.

FLC will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against Albright College (Reading, Pa.), a Division-III school that is 3-3 this season, before returning home Saturday to face No. 13 Lindenwood.
