Skyhawks storm back after the half

After a slow start, the Skyhawks came alive at just the right time.

The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team scored 40 second-half points to push past Adams State 56-44 on Saturday in Alamosa.

The Grizzlies (4-4, 0-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) were able to set the pace in the first half, milking the shot clock and holding an 18-16 edge at intermission. But FLC’s full-court pressure was able to speed things up enough in the second half to enable the Skyhawks (5-2, 2-1 RMAC) to rally for the victory.

“It was a really slow-paced game,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said. “That’s really why pressure was put on them, trying to full-court press, trying to speed up the game any way we could.

“When you’re full-court pressing and doing a good job, you have to communicate, rotate and play hard because if you don’t do those things, you get exposed. We didn’t get exposed in the second half.”

Christie Groh scored the first seven points of the second half for the Skyhawks as part of a 19-point, nine-rebound effort.

Erika Richards scored 12 for FLC, while Mary Brinton had eight points and seven rebounds off the Skyhawks’ bench.

FLC outrebounded Adams State 39-23 and hit 14-of-17 from the free-throw line.
