Skyhawks win the national downhill

Gardner wins national title

One national title already is in the bag for the Fort Lewis College cycling team at the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Rebecca Gardner won her second consecutive downhill championship for the Skyhawks, finishing in 2 minutes, 36.549 seconds. Her teammate Leila Carrillo finished third in 2:46.457.

FLC is riding for its ninth consecutive mountain bike championship and 23rd national title overall.

The Skyhawks currently trail Colorado in the team omnium standings 513-460 after Day 2 of three Saturday.

Durango High School alumnus Sepp Kuss gave the Buffaloes a boost by winning the men’s cross country title in 1:45:44.

The competition will continue at 9 a.m. Sunday with the dual slalom and mixed team relay events.
