As a resident of Skyridge, I am very concerned about the fire danger threatening the inhabitants.
Skyridge residents live at the interface of open land with dense oak brush forest and a lot of dead timber. If a fire would start on the ridge, it would be disastrous for hundreds of people and potentially extend to other neighborhoods.
Skyridge is a long subdivision with only one exit, Jenkins Ranch Road. In case of an emergency evacuation, this one exit would likely become gridlocked, making the situation deadly. This is how people in Paradise, California died – stuck in gridlocked traffic!
If we do not want Durango to become the next Paradise, we need to have the fire department conduct serious fire mitigation on the slopes of the ridge bordering Skyridge, above the Powerline trail, and help residents bordering the trail conduct mitigation on their properties as well. And we need to have a second exit to be used in case of emergency.
It is paramount that the safety of Durango residents be preserved.
