DSC lands seven in High Desert Classic finals

Quality overruled quantity for the Durango Swim Club at the seventh annual High Desert Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 22-24.

The team placed 13th out of 14 teams in terms of points but only brought 13 swimmers compared to other clubs near 100.

Haley Benjamin, 13, made the finals, which included the top eight fastest times, in six of her events.

She won the 400 individual medley in 4 minutes, 55.25 seconds, which was seven seconds faster than her previous best time.

Benjamin placed second in the 200 butterfly at 2:20.33, third in the 200 freestyle at 2:01.85, fourth in the 200 individual medley at 2:23.34, fifth in the 100 butterfly at 1:05.7 and sixth in the 100 freestyle at 58.44.

Elli Earl, 15, placed 15th in the 500 freestyle at 6:08.05, 15th in the 200 breaststroke at 2:55.01 and 30th in the 200 freestyle at 2:17.27.

Ruth Holcomb, 10, qualified for three final heats. She placed second in the 100 butterfly at 1:25.09, fifth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:40.18 and eighth in the 50 butterfly at 39.22.

Brooke Kniffin, 17, finished fourth in the 100 freestyle at 56.05, fifth in the 200 backstroke at 2:16.72 and eighth in the 200 freestyle at 2:04.84.

Angela McManus, 9, placed sixth in the 50 breaststroke at 45.55 and seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 1:41.65.

Ben Miller, 15, finished 14th in the 200 freestyle at 1:55.99, 16th in the 100 backstroke at 1:01.59, 18th in the 400 individual medley at 4:48.18 and 19th in the 100 freestyle at 53.53.

His brother, Josh Miller, 17, took seventh in the 200 individual medley at 2:08.43, eighth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:25.16 and eighth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.42.

Eliza Rossi, 11, placed eighth in the 50 breaststroke at 39.78.

Quinn Schmidt, 10, placed seventh in the 50 breaststroke at 46.34, seventh in the 200 freestyle at 2:48.06 and eighth in the 200 individual medley at 3:14.42.

DSC’s next meet will be the Mavalanche Meet on Jan. 17-19 in Grand Junction.
