Smedley takes stand on funding Brewfest

I want to take a moment to recognize and thank Mike Smedley of Bank of the San Juans.

This year, San Juan Brewfest will be mandating “proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test within two days prior to the event.”

This is unarguably the best path forward for many, if not all, public events and gatherings. However, Bank of the San Juans felt uncomfortable with such measures being implemented so close to the event. After pulling their name and support from the event, Smedley was willing to listen to public concern about the perception of the move. He promptly relayed that concern to the higher-ups, and the decision was made to maintain the bank's sizable monetary contribution to the event and to the United Way.

At a time when it's easy to feel defeated and helpless in regard to making substantive change, Mike Smedley made quick work of making the bank's patrons and the community feel heard and I thank him for that.
