I have worked for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office for 30 years in many different capacities and am currently the undersheriff. I am also a Republican. Prior to Sheriff Sean Smith being elected, the sheriff’s office was in dire need of leadership. He has provided it since Day One.
Leadership is essential to the success of any organization or team. He has provided knowledge, vision, passion and work ethic among other leadership qualities to our organization and community. I endorsed Sheriff Smith almost four years ago in a letter to the editor. I said he was extremely knowledgeable and well versed in many areas. He has certainly proven it.
Other leaders throughout the region would attest to what he brings to the table. During his tenure many issues have been addressed internally, including an upgrade in evidence storage and tracking systems; technology in patrol vehicles, to include lights, computers and in-car video and audio systems; and in detentions, a new master control room and an upgraded camera system throughout the jail.
There were concerns four years ago regarding concealed handgun permits. Currently, Sheriff Smith has issued 1,834 permits and denied 23 for justifiable reasons. Sheriff Smith has been endorsed by the local Fraternal Order of Police and the Durango Herald. In our bimonthly leadership meetings, we stress doing the “right thing” when it comes to making decisions. Politics are not a factor when making decisions. Do the right thing and re-elect Sheriff Sean Smith.
