I need to respond to Garrett Valencia's allegation that Sheriff Smith "promoted" his wife during the first year in office. (Times, Sept. 7, 2018)
I was leaving the sheriff's office to move to Virginia after 10 years in my position. I DID NOT leave because of Sheriff Smith. Traci was one of a few people who applied for the position and went through the vetting process that everyone goes through.
Sheriff Smith was in no way involved in the selection process. She was the most qualified for the position. Traci has been with the sheriff's office for many, many years prior to Sheriff Smith's election. Shame on Garrett for making it seem like there was special treatment when there was not. I challenge Garrett Valencia to be honest about his relationship with former Sheriff Schirard. He is a part of the good ol' boys network that was much of the problem during the Schirard years.
