Smoke above downtown Durango caused by small brush fire

Fire near Greenmount Cemetery under control

A small brush fire at Greenmount Cemetery near downtown Durango caused smoke to rise above the city Saturday.

Durango Fire Protection District crews responded to the fire, about 50 square feet in size, on the eastern side of the cemetery near Hilltop House, also called Southwest Colorado Corrections, said Battalion Chief Randy Baker.

“It’s under control. We’re just finishing up right now,” Baker said Saturday afternoon.

Durango Fire responded with eight crew members and six trucks, including an ambulance, fire engine and brush trucks.

The fire district did not know the cause of the fire, Baker said. An investigation is ongoing.
