Snake on a trail

A rattlesnake was seen soaking up rays about 3:45 p.m. Sunday on Rocky Road, a connector trail between Raider Ridge and Horse Gulch. Craig Hammersmith, a circulation representative at The Durango Herald, was mountain biking when he heard the rattle and snapped this photo from about 15 feet away. “I thought it was my front derailleur,” he said. “I practically hit the thing.”
