Snow headed for San Juans

Not much expected in Durango

A wintry storm was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of snow to the north San Juan Mountains late Monday and overnight, with a possibility of minor accumulations in Durango.

The storm was expected to peak with an 80 percent chance of precipitation Monday night.

“Durango could get some showers tonight, but really no accumulation, very little associated at all,” Joe Ramey, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Grand Junction, said Monday.

The storm will center on the north end of the San Juan Mountains, Ramey said.

“Well north of Durango, north of Red Mountain Pass, is I think where we’ll see significant snowfall,” he said.

Today will bring colder temperatures as the storm exits, with a low around 13 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

“Tuesday night will be the coldest night of the season so far, somewhere in the low teens,” Ramey said.

Gradually warming temperatures are forecast to follow, with highs returning to the 50s by Thursday. Sunny skies and above-normal temperatures are forecast for the weekend.

Customers at Peerless Tyre Co. have been buying snow tires for about the last month, said manager Sammy Denham. They were streaming in Monday morning.

“We are two or three hours behind,” he said.

But the forecast wasn’t enough to move the needle at Trimble True Value, where sales of winter gear appeared normal, manager Steve Simonson said.

“When it gets a little deeper, they get more excited,” Simonson said. “It’s just another beautiful day here in northern Durango.”
