Snow in Durango area should stay above 8,000 feet

Rain showers expected through Monday in Durango
Umbrellas might be needed around Durango today and Monday, with rain expected at elevations below 8,000 feet.

Durango may see a mix of snow and rain Sunday afternoon, but any snow accumulation is expected to remain above 8,000 feet in elevation, forecasters said Saturday.

“What we’ve been seeing so far is the snow level remaining quite high with this storm,” said Julie Malingowski, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

“The cooler air behind the front isn’t really going to make it down to Durango. That’s why we’re expecting any precipitation that will fall over the next few days to be rain for the most part.”

Scattered showers are expected Sunday night and Monday as a result of “wrap-around moisture” associated with two storm systems that made definitive forecasts difficult Friday and Saturday, she said.

“It is doing some weird things, which makes it challenging for us,” Malingowski said.

Snowfall was expected in the San Juan Mountains overnight, with a winter weather advisory set to expire at 5 a.m. Sunday.

But all remnants of the storm are expected to be gone by Tuesday morning, making way for a high-pressure zone that will boost temperatures to normal or slightly above-normal for the remainder of the week, with highs in the upper 40s or lower 50s, she said.

The next possibility for moisture arrives next weekend, but it is too soon to know if it will result in rain or snow for Durango, she said.
