The annual Snowdown Light Parade, the largest event held each year in downtown Durango, will start at 6 p.m. Friday on Main Avenue with a single firework. Residents should be aware of several road closures, parking restrictions and added bus routes for the evening:

The staging area for the parade includes the 500 blocks of Main Avenue, East Second Avenue and the alley between Main Avenue and East Second Avenue; and Fifth Street from Main Avenue to East Sixth Avenue.The parade route will be on Main Avenue, from College Drive to 14th Street. Cross streets in the parade route from Main Avenue to the ½-block alleys will be closed.Durango Transit Center will offer free public bus transportation for all routes from 4 to 9 p.m., and a free parade shuttle will run every 15 minutes starting at 4:30 p.m., from La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., to downtown.Signs will be displayed on parking meters about times and locations of closures.Parking in the Town Plaza complex is for customers only. Parade attendees must find parking elsewhere.Parking is allowed in parking lots at Durango Transit Center and on East Second Avenue after 5 p.m. Parking is also allowed at every metered spaces not located in closed areas for the parade. You must pay the meter until 6 p.m.Closures downtown will include:

The 500 block of Main Avenue and Fifth Street from Main Avenue to East Sixth Avenue, from 2:30 to 10:30 p.m.Temporary business access for traffic will be allowed until 3:30 p.m. off College Drive through the alley between Main Avenue and East Second Avenue.The 100 blocks of east and west 12th Street will be closed to traffic and parking from 3:30 to 10:30 p.m.East Second Avenue, from Fourth Street to College Drive, will be open to traffic, but parking is prohibited from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the 500 block of East Second Avenue.Parade attendees should also note:

All vehicles parked in private lots adjacent to closure areas should vacate before 4 p.m. to avoid citations. Vehicles parked in these areas after barricades are in place at 4 p.m. will not be able to be moved until barricades are removed.After barricades are in place, the only pedestrian crossings available on Main Avenue during the parade will be at Eighth and 11th streets.People should stay off Main Avenue after the parade to allow city crews to clean up; stay on sidewalks and cross at marked crosswalks as they are reopened.To watch the parade remotely, visit The Durango Herald’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TheDurangoHerald/
