Southern Ute tribe declines comment on Ignacio shooting

Witness reported five gunshots, two people flee and one injury

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe has refused to release any information on a shooting that occurred Wednesday in downtown Ignacio.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, multiple police agencies responded to a reported shooting in Ignacio.

Officers with the Ignacio Police Department, Southern Ute Police Department and Southern Ute Rangers scoured the town looking for the suspect.

Ignacio Town Manager Mark Garcia told The Durango Herald around 3 p.m. that a suspect was in custody, but he did not have any more details on the incident.

Following up on the shooting Thursday, Ignacio Police Sgt. Wes Crume told the Herald that the Southern Ute Indian Tribe would be the lead agency investigating the incident.

Crume said the shooting occurred on Southern Ute Indian Tribe land but crossed over several jurisdictions, including the town of Ignacio and La Plata County, when the shooting suspects fled the scene.

When asked for more information about the shooting, Southern Ute Indian Tribe spokeswoman Lindsay Box said in an email: “The Tribe does not have a comment regarding the investigation of the shooting. However, the Tribe would like to make the public aware there is no imminent concern for public safety.”

According to a witness interviewed Wednesday, five gunshots went off around 2 p.m. that afternoon in the alley of Shoshone Avenue, a residential street off of Highway 172 (Goddard Avenue).

One man was injured, and two other men ran off, the witness said.

Because of limited information, it’s unclear if the second suspect was caught, and it’s not possible to check on the condition of the injured victim.
