Southern Ute Veterans to hold Memorial Day remembrance

The annual Southern Ute Veterans' Association Memorial Day ceremonies will be Monday starting at 10 a.m. in the Southern Ute Veterans' Park on the tribal campus. All are welcome.

The Day of Remembrance will honor all who have served in the military with tribal drumming, singing of the National Anthem, flag raising, Pledge of Allegiance led by students from the Southern Ute Academy, presentation of memorial wreaths, and speeches.

Along with Southern Ute and other Ute tribal veterans, guest speakers will include Francis Mitchell (USMC), Joey Strickland, U.S. Army Colonel retired, and Marvin Trujillo (USMC) from Laguna Pueblo.

After ceremonies in the park, participants will walk in procession led by veteran and Tribal Elder Austin Box carrying the veterans' Eagle Staff, to the Bear Dance bridge to drop a memorial wreath into the river.

The procession will continue to Ouray Memorial Cemetery to complete the remembrance with a 21-gun salute and playing of taps.

The event finishes back at Veterans' Park with the ceremonial meal.
