Thinking about my Durango Herald and colleagues and journalists worldwide recently. It is a tough time to be in this profession. My experience has been of the amazing dedication, hard work (and low pay) of those in it. Journalists do not need to fear for their lives while pursuing their craft, but that is what many incredible people do and have done for decades worldwide. They do so as a public service to tell our stories, shine light on the workings of government and hold the powerful to account.
Globally, the threat of violence in authoritarian countries is a way of life for many. Increasingly, it is another point of legitimate worry in the United States. This threat of violence against journalists and the “liberal media” – especially as a “joke” with Milo Yiannopoulos and Donald Trump – is very dangerous and must be renounced, but not with violence. Stand up, speak out and take exception, but please do so peacefully in your words and actions. And please support your local community newspaper.
