I believe in a bicameral political system that generally reflects opinions of the population in general. That includes a Supreme Court that is balanced, not weighted heavily to one side of center. If it was skewed to my side of center, it would not be responsible to the country.
I am registered as an independent because I cannot respect either political party at the national level. Their priority is the next election rather than compromising to do what’s appropriate for a pluralistic American society.
Equally idealistic, perhaps, is concern about the character and psychological maturity of a head of state.
How can character be divorced from and subordinated to political and social issues? I have thought about this a great deal and have concluded that people must simply prioritize character differently. I have truly struggled to construct an explanation that makes sense. If character is swept under the rug, we can forgo honesty, integrity and other fundamental values in such a constitutional democracy that have made America great. “MAGA” may hold strong psychological attractions but, as demonstrated, does not represent those values.
In this saga of impeachment inquiry, why would one defend a person lacking all consideration of the greater good outside of himself, and who, more than any other, has diminished the prospects of his own political party? Shouldn’t we speed the day when both parties can be respectful if not proud of their presidential candidates?
