The Bayfield Marshal’s Office is on the lookout for a driver who apparently spilled gallons of diesel fuel at a gas station in Bayfield and fled the scene.

But at this point, it appears there are more questions than answers.

“We don’t fully understand what transpired,” said Bayfield Town Manager Chris LaMay.

This much is known: About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a driver pulled up to a gas pump at the Conoco Gas Station at 650 South Buck Highway to fill up a vehicle, and a few minutes later, drove off.

A clerk took out the garbage and found spilled diesel fuel, LaMay said.

It’s unclear how much diesel spilled. The gas pump meter read 17 gallons, but authorities Thursday were trying to determine how much went into the vehicle and how much spilled.

The clerk called Upper Pine River Fire Protection District, LaMay said, and crews put a chemical solution on the spilled diesel fuel in the parking lot.

LaMay said crews were out Thursday to use a Hydrovac truck to clean up 2-3 gallons of diesel that flowed into the storm water system.

Upper Pine River Fire Protection District Chief Bruce Evans did not return calls seeking comment Thursday morning. A clerk at Conoco declined to comment.

Authorities plan to review surveillance footage to help identify the driver and vehicle, and estimate how the fuel spilled.

“Something happened,” he said. “But at this point, we can’t explain it.”
