SPLC is not a reliable source for news

Anyone following the news in the past year knows with whom the Southern Poverty Law Center is associated.

Remember the softball game where the Louisiana Representative was shot? The shooter was a follower of the Southern Poverty Law Center. This organization promotes anything that is anti-American and family.

Because of the reckless way the SPLC labels organizations that are conservative, family-focused with a faith-based foundation, there has been devastating consequences. One of them was a shooter in the Family Research Council’s office in Aug. 2012. The hero in this case was the security guard, or the story may have been one of another mass shooting.

The SPLC portrays itself as being tolerant, but only tolerant if you believe what they believe. There is no room for tolerance for pro-life and traditional marriage beliefs, and the rule of law.

The headline the Durango Herald chose (Feb. 7) demonstrates slanted speech, and one can draw a conclusion that the Aztec killer was right wing – who has even heard of “alt-right wing?” Most readers will associate the term with conservatism, or the “right.” To use the SPLC as a source for substantiating your news article is weak and misleading.

There are enough divisive attitudes in the news today. Learn how to report a story without adding to the tension – and I would suggest not getting the “news” off the Southern Poverty Law Center website.
