The Ignacio High School track and field team hosted the Abel Velasquez Invitational on Saturday, welcoming 11 teams to town.

Lexi Young won the 200-meter dash for Ignacio in 28.08. Maci Barnes, Aexis Pontine, Kendrick Nossaman, Camron Cooper, Tyler Barnes, Jeremy Roderick and Kyle Rima also scored top-10 finishes for the Bobcats.

Durango, meanwhile, won 17 events to claim both the boys and girls team titles. Ignacio’s girls placed fourth, and its boys finished eighth. Bayfield’s girls placed eighth, and its boys finished seventh.

Skyhawks sweep N.M. Highlands

The Fort Lewis College softball team scored its first four-game sweep of the season over the weekend, beating New Mexico Highlands 2-1 and 10-2 on Saturday and 7-2 and 14-4 on Sunday.

With the first game tied 1-1 in the seventh, Alex Tenorio singled home Jolynn Niegocki to help FLC start the series with a 2-1 win.

In the second game, FLC jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a win. Katie Pippel and Cara Daugherty both had three RBIs.

On Sunday, Tenorio, Tatum Caldwell and Cat Rodman all hit home runs, helping FLC take both games.

Demon lacrosse falls to Montrose

The Durango High School boys lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead Saturday against Montrose. Montrose, however, tied the game 5-5 heading into the half and then won the third and fourth quarters to take the game, 11-7.

Owen Muraro scored four goals for DHS. Henry Howe score once and assisted six goals while Jesse Bader and Jameson Connolly each scored one goal for the Demons.

Edwards sinks hole-in-one to lead FLC

Led by a second-place finish from senior Darren Edwards, who picked up a hole-in-one in round three, the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team finished second as a team at the Southern Colorado Masters at the Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Sunday through Tuesday.

The Skyhawks finished +19, coming in behind CSU Pueblo, which was even through 54 holes. Fort Lewis bested seven Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools in the process with Colorado Mesa coming in third place at +24.

FLC senior Samuel Salisbury finished tied for 12th. Sophomore Nicholas Krantz placed 17th.

FLC will next compete in the RMAC championships April 17-19 at Arizona’s Whirlwind Golf Club.

Skyhawks fall to No. 6 Regis

Battling 35-mph winds, the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team dropped a 17-3 decision to No. 6 Regis University at Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Sunday.

The Rangers led 6-1 after the first and 14-2 at halftime, outshooting FLC 26-11 in the process. Regis is now 10-0. FLC is 3-6.
