The Cleveland Indians’ 6-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Tuesday’s World Series opener drew the largest audience for game one of the Major League Baseball championship since 2009, showing wide interest in two teams that have suffered for decades without bringing home a title.
The broadcast delivered a 12.6 rating, meaning almost 13 percent of U.S. TV households were tuned in, according to preliminary data released by the Fox network, which televised the game. That was the highest rating since the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees faced off in 2009, according to the broadcast unit of 21st Century Fox.
The Cubs and Indians have the longest championship droughts in baseball, with Chicago’s team having last won in 1908. The Indians took home baseball’s championship in 1948. Viewing in those cities was especially high, with almost 50 percent of Cleveland’s TV’s tuned in and 34 percent watching in Chicago. Eight newer teams, including five that joined the majors in 1960s, have never won the World Series.

ENGLEWOOD – DeMarcus Ware returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since breaking his right forearm in a game on Sept. 18.
The Broncos (5-2) are hoping Ware can play Sunday when they face the surging San Diego Chargers (3-4).
Police Wednesday said two men were arrested on suspicion of breaking into the home of Ware and stealing his Super Bowl 50 ring.
Denver police spokesman John White said Wednesday that Ware’s stolen property had been recovered.
White says the suspects, 40-year-old Billy McCaslin and 31-year-old Sergio Irreza, were identified through tips from the public after police announced the break-in that occurred while Ware was at Monday night’s football game with the Houston Texans.
ENGLEWOOD – C.J. Anderson is seeking a second opinion on his injured right knee 48 hours after his best performance of the season sparked Denver’s 27-9 win over the Houston Texans.
The Broncos are unsure how long he might be out.
Anderson, who signed a four-year, $18 million contract in the offseason, bruised his right knee on his final carry of the first quarter Monday night, an 11-yard run.
He returned to the game, however, and ran 14 more times for 84 yards, finishing with a season-best 107 yards on 16 carries.
Coach Gary Kubiak said Anderson was sore Tuesday and went for medical tests. He missed Wednesday’s practice to seek a second opinion.

LONDON – West Ham manager Slaven Bilic described as “unacceptable” the fan violence that marred the team’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the English League Cup on Wednesday.
Objects were thrown and there were scuffles between both sets of fans near the end of the match at the London Stadium, as police and stewards battled to maintain segregation behind the goal being defended by West Ham.
It was the latest outbreak of crowd trouble at West Ham’s new ground. The club left Upton Park, its home of 112 years, at the end last season and moved to the stadium that was the centerpiece of the London Olympics in 2012.
The worst trouble came last month, when West Ham supporters fought among themselves and clashed with stewards and Watford fans during a Premier League game.
