Cavendish wins Stage 12 for historic win No. 100
TREVISO, Italy – Sprinter Mark Cavendish won the rainy 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday for his 100th career victory, while Vincenzo Nibali maintained his overall lead.
Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins dropped out of contention, finishing more than 3½ minutes behind the main pack as he struggled with a cold.
Cavendish clocked just over 3 hours along the 83-mile route from Longarone to Treviso for his third win in this year’s race, 13th Giro stage win overall and his 39th in cycling’s three Grand Tours – the Giro, Tour and Spanish Vuelta.

USA scores 8 in a rare rout over Russia at worlds
HELSINKI – Paul Stastny had two goals and two assists, and Craig Smith had five assists Thursday to give the United States a spot in the hockey world championships semifinals with an 8-3 pounding of Russia.
David Moss also scored, and five other players – Ryan Carter, Nate Thompson, Jacob Trouba and the two late additions of TJ Oshie and Alex Galchenyuk – all had their first goal in the tournament.
Goaltender John Gibson made 31 saves.
The Americans next will face Switzerland, which eliminated 2012 bronze medalist Czech Republic 2-1 in Stockholm.

Two more matches, then Beckham will retire
LONDON – David Beckham is retiring from soccer, ending a career in which he transcended the sport with forays into fashion and a marriage to a pop star that made him a global celebrity.
The 38-year-old former England captain, who recently won a league title in a fourth country with Paris Saint-Germain, said Thursday he will quit after the season. Beckham has two more matches left at PSG – against Brest on Saturday and at Lorient on May 26.
Donovan left off USA roster for World Cup qualifiers
CHICAGO – Landon Donovan was left off the 29-man U.S. roster for a training camp ahead of a trio of World Cup qualifiers next month, but American coach Jurgen Klinsmann anticipates he will rejoin the team at some unspecified point.
Seeking its seventh consecutive World Cup berth, the U.S. will travel to Jamaica on June 7, will play Panama four days later in Seattle, then will face Honduras in Salt Lake City on June 18. The Americans also have exhibitions against Belgium on May 29 in Cleveland, and Germany on June 2 in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Open is leaving CBS for ESPN in 2015 and 11 years
The U.S. Open tennis tournament will leave CBS after nearly a half-century and move all TV coverage to cable starting in 2015 under an 11-year contract with ESPN.
