Dahlmeier wins individual race for world title

HOCHFILZEN, Austria – Laura Dahlmeier won the women’s individual competition Wednesday for her third gold medal and fourth overall at the biathlon world championships.

In a series that started last year in Oslo, Dahlmeier won a medal in nine consecutive world championship races, matching the all-time record set by retired Norwegian great Tora Berger.

Trump declines ESPN invite to fill out bracket

President Donald Trump won’t fill out an NCAA Tournament bracket on ESPN this March, unlike his predecessor, Barack Obama.

Trump did make a prediction on the Super Bowl, picking New England to win by eight points. He wasn’t far off, as the Patriots rallied to beat the Falcons 34-28 in overtime.

White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks told The Washington Post in an email, “We look forward to working with ESPN on another opportunity in the near future.”

Russia recruits an Australian for 2020 Olympic team

MOSCOW – Russia is hoping to recruit former world champion track cyclist Shane Perkins of Australia in a push for medals at the 2020 Olympics.

Perkins said Wednesday in a Facebook statement that he “will now be riding for Russia,” alongside a picture of himself in Russian team gear.

Perkins said his move had the backing of Australian cycling officials. However, Russia said the switch isn’t yet complete.

Back spasms force Woods to withdraw from presser

LOS ANGELES – Back spasms not only kept Tiger Woods from playing at Riviera, they forced him to withdraw from a news conference.

Woods, the unofficial host of the Genesis Open, pushed his new conference back until Wednesday and then canceled it. The tournament said in a statement that after getting daily treatment the last four days, Woods was advised by doctors to limit all activities.

Woods has not played Riviera, his hometown event, since 2006. When California-based Hyundai Motor America signed on as title sponsor last year, it picked the Tiger Woods Foundation as the chief charitable beneficiary and the tournament host organization.

Dodgers officially sign reliever Romo

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Reliever Sergio Romo officially signed a $3 million, one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers after nine seasons with the archrival San Francisco Giants.

Romo’s deal includes $250,000 in performance bonuses, with $125,000 each for appearing in 50 and 60 games. He is likely to be the Dodgers’ setup man for closer Kenley Jansen.

Jets release LT Clady after only one season

NEW YORK – The New York Jets released left tackle Ryan Clady after just one season in which he played only nine games because of a shoulder injury after being acquired from Denver.

Clady was due $10 million next season – with a $1 million roster bonus due Wednesday.

Young signs with agent, wants to play again

Vince Young still isn’t quite ready to call it a career.

The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback hired agent Leigh Steinberg. Young, who turns 34 in May, hasn’t been on an NFL roster since the 2014 offseason, when he was with Cleveland for two weeks before being released. He hasn’t played in a regular-season NFL game since 2011, when he was with Philadelphia.
