Rule change comes for damaged NASCAR cars

CONCORD, N.C. – NASCAR will not permit damaged race cars to return to the track this season unless the repairs can be made on pit road within a tight window.

Beginning later this month at Daytona, if a car receives enough damage during an on-track incident that it must go to the garage for repairs, the team will not be allowed to repair it in an effort to get back on track. Damaged vehicles can be repaired on pit road during a five-minute cumulative time limit.

Big 12 to withhold revenue share from Baylor

The Big 12 Conference said Wednesday it will withhold millions of dollars in revenue from Baylor until an outside review determines the university and athletic department are complying with Title IX guidelines and other regulations in the wake of a campus sexual assault scandal.

The league said it would withhold 25 percent of future revenue distribution payments to Baylor. The Big 12 paid out $30.4 million to each conference member last year, so a quarter of that would be $7.6 million if the payment remained the same this year.

The Big 12 said its board of directors voted unanimously to withhold the money. Baylor did not take part in the vote.

Baylor is not being fined; the money is being placed in escrow pending a third-party verification of Baylor’s reform efforts. But the sanction is the first by the Big 12 since the school in Waco, Texas, was hit by a wave of complaints that it repeatedly or intentionally mishandled assault allegations, many of them involving football players.

Captain Furyk tweaks Ryder Cup points system

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk is tweaking the U.S. points system to put more value on winning PGA Tour events than high finishes in the majors.

Furyk also said Wednesday that the final pick will be made after the BMW Championship in 2018, instead of a last-minute decision before the Americans leave for Paris.

The biggest difference is the majors. Points will count double at the 2018 majors, but only for the winner. Everyone else will receive 1½ points. Furyk says because majors have such high purses, finishing third in a major is equal to winning a tour event when points are doubled.

Former Knick ejected, arrested after altercation

NEW YORK – Former Knicks star Charles Oakley was escorted from his seats at Madison Square Garden and arrested after an altercation near team owner James Dolan.

Oakley shoved security guards before they pulled him away from his seat behind the baseline during the first quarter of the Knicks’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Fans chanted “Oakley! Oakley!” in support of the popular power forward.

The 53-year-old Oakley played for the Knicks from 1988-98, helping them reach the NBA Finals, but has a poor relationship with the team because of his criticisms of Dolan, the Madison Square Garden chairman.

Security was called to Oakley’s seat after he was shouting at Dolan.
