Buescher stays hot with his 2nd win in 3 races

DOVER, Del. – Chris Buescher stretched his fuel, connected with a teammate and held on to win the Xfinity Series race at Dover International Speedway on Saturday.

Buescher won for the second time in the last three races and added to his lead in the series points race. He edged Chase Elliott for a win two weeks ago at Iowa Speedway.

He went 98 miles on his final run, saving just enough fuel to pull into victory lane. Buescher knocked his Roush Fenway Racing teammate Darrell Wallace Jr. out of the way late in the race to take the lead. Wallace, who started on the pole, lost his left rear tire and was forced to pit.

Rain ends Detroit’s first IndyCar race early

DETROIT – Carlos Munoz earned his first career IndyCar win Saturday at Belle Isle when the race was called because of rain after 47 laps.

The 23-year-old Colombian driver had a substantial lead when a caution flag came out with over 30 minutes remaining in what was supposed to be a 2-hour race.

It was the first of two IndyCar races this weekend at Belle Isle. The second is Sunday.

Bowditch beats bad course conditions, keeps lead

IRVING, Texas – Steven Bowditch shot a 4-under 65 on Saturday in the AT&T Byron Nelson to take a two-stroke lead and leave hometown favorite Jordan Spieth six shots back heading into the final round.

On a mostly sunny day that started with the second consecutive three-hour delay because of earlier rain, Bowditch got to 13-under 195.

Dustin Johnson is in the group tied for second after the day’s low round of 62 on the rain-altered par 69 at TPC Four Seasons.

Danish man out front by 2 shots at the Irish Open

NEWCASTLE, Northern Ireland – Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark shot a 4-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead in the third round of the Irish Open.

The 40-year-old Kjeldsen used superior putting to break free of a six-way tie as gusting winds at Royal County Down sabotaged many players’ short games.

But Kjeldsen, ranked 303rd, bogeyed the final two holes to reduce his lead over Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain and Maximilian Kieffer of Germany.

Kieffer shot a course-record round of 65, one shot lower than the previous best set in 1939 and matched Friday.

Nordqvist chasing Pressel at ShopRite LPGA Classic

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Morgan Pressel kept her patience Saturday despite a steady breeze and greens that grew bumpy in the afternoon, shooting a 2-under 69 to maintain a one-stroke lead in the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Pressel had three birdies and a bogey to reach 7-under 135 on Stockton Seaview’s Bay Course. The 27-year-old American won the last of her two LPGA Tour victories in 2008.

Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist was second. She birdied the last three holes for a 69.

NBA

Elite offensive mind will look to make the Pelicans fly

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Pelicans hired Golden State Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry as head coach.

Gentry is expected to remain with Golden State until the Warriors complete the NBA Finals against Cleveland.

Gentry has served as a head coach four times, compiling a career record of 335-370. His most successful stint came with Phoenix from 2008 to 2013. In the 2009-10 season, he coached the Suns to 54 regular-season victories and a Western Conference finals berth.

Gentry succeeds Monty Williams, who was fired despite making the playoffs this season.
