Showalter wins AL honors; Williams wins NL honors
NEW YORK – Baltimore’s Buck Showalter was voted American League Manager of the Year for the third time, edging the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Scioscia and Kansas City’s Ned Yost.
Matt Williams was chosen National League Manager of the Year after guiding the Washington Nationals to the league’s best record in his first season on the job.
Williams got 18 first-place votes and 109 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced Tuesday. He became the fourth manager to win in his first year.
Pittsburgh’s Clint Hurdle, who earned the NL honor last year, was second with eight first-place votes and 80 points. Bruce Bochy of the World Series champion San Francisco Giants was third with three firsts and 30 points. Miami’s Mike Redmond also got a first-place vote.
Showalter received 25 of 30 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced Tuesday. Scioscia was second with four firsts and 61 points and Yost third with 41 points, followed by Seattle’s Lloyd McClendon with 29 points.
The Sporting News names Duquette top executive
PHOENIX – Baltimore’s Dan Duquette was voted The Sporting News baseball executive of the year after the Orioles won their first AL East title since 1997.
Duquette also won the award in 1992 as general manager of the Montreal Expos.
Duquette received nine votes in balloting announced Monday as the annual general managers’ meetings began, one more than Kansas City GM Dayton Moore. The Los Angeles Angels’ Jerry Dipoto received five, followed by Oakland’s Billy Beane (four) and Washington’s Mike Rizzo (three). The New York Yankees’ Brian Cashman, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Ned Colletti, Milwaukee’s Doug Melvin and Seattle’s Jack Zduriencik received one vote each.
The award is voted on by 33 major league executives.
Longoria slams Japanese in MLB All-Stars exhibition
NISHINOMIYA, Japan – Evan Longoria hit a grand slam, and the Major League Baseball All-Stars survived a late rally to beat a split Japan squad 8-7 in an exhibition game Tuesday ahead of their five-game postseason tour.
Salvador Perez hit a solo homer in the sixth, and Dexter Fowler hit a solo shot in the seventh to make it 8-1.
Chris Capuano picked up the win after striking out three and holding Japan to one hit over four scoreless innings.
The five-game series against Japan will start Wednesday at Kyocera Dome in Osaka. There also are games at Tokyo Dome, Sapporo Dome and Cellular Stadium in Okinawa.
Pirates and Rockies trade right-handed pitching
PITTSBURGH – The Colorado Rockies traded right-hander Rob Scahill to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league righty Shane Carle.
The deal was announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Scahill was 1-0 with a 4.80 earned-run average in 12 relief outings for Colorado this season. Scahill made his big league debut in 2012 with Colorado and pitched 23 games in the majors in 2013.
The 23-year-old Carle was a combined 4-8 with a 3.67 ERA at two levels of Class A ball, mostly as a starter.

World Cup champions call a USA friendly in June
World Cup champion Germany said it will host the United States in an exhibition game in June.
Germany beat the U.S. men’s soccer team 1-0 in its final group stage match at the World Cup before going on to win the title in July.
