DHS alum Llewellyn RMAC’s top special teamer again

For the second time in three weeks, Avery Llewellyn was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Colorado Mines kicker and Durango High School alumnus helped the Orediggers top Fort Lewis 51-16 by hitting field goals of 29, 32 and 34 yards to move to 10-of-11 on field goal attempts this season.

Llewellyn also had a 55 yard punt and averaged 48.2 yards per kick Saturday. If he had enough attempts to qualify, the sophomore would lead the nation in average punt yardage at 47.2.

Arkansas AD Long tabbed to lead playoff comittee

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long will be the first chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, and the rest of the 13-member panel that will decide which teams play for the 2014 national championship will be revealed officially Wednesday.

The names of the other members expected to be on the committee, however, already have been reported by The Associated Press and other media outlets.

Long is among five current athletic directors, along with West Virginia’s Oliver Luck, Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez, Clemson’s Dan Radakovich and Southern California’s Pat Haden.

Also expected on the committee are: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; retired Lt. Gen. Michael Gould; former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese; former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne; former Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington coach Tyrone Willingham; former NFL and Mississippi quarterback Archie Manning; former NCAA vice president Tom Jernstedt; and former college sports writer Steve Wieberg.

Plans announced for a game at Bristol Motor Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Plans have been announced for Tennessee and Virginia Tech to play their 2016 game at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Track and officials from both universities formally announced the plans Monday for the “Battle of Bristol” during a news conference. The game scheduled for Sept. 10, 2016, will be a national showcase for both programs that could set an NCAA single-game attendance record at the 52-year-old racetrack.

Bristol’s speedway can hold around 160,000 fans. The speedway sits nearly halfway between the campuses of the two schools, off Interstate 81 in Tennessee. The NCAA-recognized attendance record for college football of 115,109 was set last month at Michigan Stadium for Michigan-Notre Dame.

Veteran umpire Wally Bell dies of heart attack at 48

NEW YORK – Major League Baseball umpire Wally Bell, who worked the NL playoff series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals this month, died Monday. He was 48.

Major League Baseball confirmed Bell’s death Monday. He died of an apparent heart attack in his home state of Ohio.

Bell worked the 2006 World Series and three All-Star games, including this year’s event at Citi Field.

North Carolina’s Hatchell diagnosed with leukemia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell has been diagnosed with leukemia.

In a release from the school Monday, Hatchell said she would temporarily step away from her coaching duties to focus on treatment.

Hatchell, 61, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last month. She’s preparing for her 28th season with the Tar Heels and has 908 career victories, making her one of only three head coaches in the sport to win 900 games.

Hatchell has led UNC to the 1994 NCAA championship, three Final Fours and eight Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championships.
