Sam Hornish Jr. overtakes the pole-sitter for a victory

NEWTON, Iowa – Sam Hornish Jr. beat Ryan Blaney off a restart with 21 laps to go and hung on to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series race Sunday at Iowa Speedway.

Pole-sitter Ryan Blaney was second, followed by Regan Smith, Chase Elliott and Elliott Sadler in the first stand-alone event of the season.

Hornish, in the No. 54 car usually driven by Kyle Busch, led 167 of 250 laps to win in second Nationwide start of the season for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Elliott has a two-point lead over Sadler and Smith in the series points standings.

Carpenter climbs onto the Indy 500 pole once again

INDIANAPOLIS – Ed Carpenter has won the Indianapolis 500 pole for the second consecutive year.

He had a four-lap average of 231.067 mph and was the last of the nine fastest qualifiers to hit the track Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He knocked off James Hinchcliffe on the last lap to start first on the May 25 race.

Pieter Weening wins the ninth stage of the Giro; Evans leads

SESTOLA, Italy – Pieter Weening of the Netherlands edged out Davide Malacarne to win the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday, while Cadel Evans retained the overall lead.

Weening had been part of a breakaway group and apologized to Malacarne as he sprinted past him at the end of the final climb of the 107-mile leg from Lugo to Sestola.

Miguel Angel Jimenez and Brendon Todd lead a full day

IRVING, Texas – Brendon Todd won the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a bogey-free 4-under 66 for a two-stroke victory over Mike Weir.

GIRONA, Spain – Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Spanish Open on Sunday after a three-way playoff to become the European Tour’s first winner over the age of 50.

Jimenez beat Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Australia’s Richard Green in a playoff after he was the only one to make par on the first extra hole.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Lizette Salas won the Kingsmill Championship on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour title, finishing with even-par 71 for a four-stroke victory.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kenny Perry won his third Champions Tour major in the past year with a one-stroke victory over Mark Calcavecchia on Sunday in the Regions Tradition.

Perry closed with an even-par 72 at Shoal Creek to finish with a 7-under 281, while other contenders had up-and-down days, and John Cook lost the lead with a double hit.

Hockey

Both Canada and U.S. bounce back at world championships

MINSK, Belarus – Defenseman Ryan Ellis scored in overtime to give Canada a 3-2 comeback victory over defending champion Sweden at the at the ice hockey world championship on Sunday, while two goals from Tyler Johnson lifted the United States 3-1 over Finland.

In the late games, Russia blanked Germany 3-0 for its sixth consecutive victory of the tournament, and the Czech Republic overcame Norway 1-0.

Djokovic and Serena Williams take Italian Open singles titles

ROME – Novak Djokovic extended his recent dominance over Rafael Nadal by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory Sunday to win the Italian Open for the third time.

In the women’s final, Serena Williams kept the crowd from being a factor in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over 10th-seeded home favorite Sara Errani to win her third Rome title.
