Big blow behind plate dealt to playoff-bound team

WASHINGTON – Washington Nationals All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos is out for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, after tearing the ACL in his right knee.

Manager Dusty Baker said Ramos will have surgery to repair the ligament, which he tore during an awkward landing while catching a relay throw Monday night.

Ramos was hitting .307 with 22 home runs and 80 RBIs and was one of baseball’s best offensive catchers. Baker says the Nationals’ other top hitters, including Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy, will be responsible for making up for the lost power.

Tebow sharp in last tuneup before his big debut

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow recorded a pair of hits, scored a run and ended the game with a sliding grab in his final intrasquad game in the New York Mets’ instructional league.

Tebow, who is scheduled to play his first game Wednesday, singled in his final two at-bats in Tuesday’s simulated game.

After striking out swinging in the first inning, the left fielder looped a single to shallow center field in the second on a hit that barely eluded a diving catch by shortstop Hansel Moreno, delighting the couple hundred fans in attendance.

Tebow followed that in the third with a sharp grounder in the hole between the third baseman and shortstop.

Bar: Marlins’ Fernandez was there before fatal accident

MIAMI – Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was a patron at a Miami River bar and restaurant the same night he and two friends were killed in a boat crash, a spokeswoman for the establishment confirmed Tuesday.

American Social Bar & Kitchen spokeswoman Dana Rhoden said in an email that Fernandez was there before the accident. The bar is along the Miami River in the city’s downtown section and allows boats to dock alongside.

Fernandez, 24, died when the boat he owned slammed at high speed into a rock jetty early Sunday just off South Beach, investigators say. Emilio Jesus Macias, 27, and 25-year-old Eduardo Rivero also died.

WSVN-TV reported a black bag containing Jose Fernandez’s checkbook and four autographed baseballs apparently washed ashore on Miami Beach not far from the accident site.

McGregor will make it to New York for big UFC card

LAS VEGAS – Conor McGregor will try to become the first fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously on a night the sport makes a splashy entrance into the last U.S. state to legalize mixed martial arts.

The wildly popular Irish brawler is fighting in the main event for Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight belt – one of three title fights on a card with several fights that could easily headline on another night. The UFC wants its Madison Square Garden event on Nov. 12 to top the promotion’s biggest cards, especially after UFC 200 in July was marred by doping violations and a lineup that reshuffled several times.
