Rockies bring back coaches, search for manager

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies will bring back three coaches as they search for manager Walt Weiss’ replacement.

The team announced Tuesday that third base coach Stu Cole, pitching coach Steve Foster and bullpen coach Darren Holmes will remain on staff. Those not returning include hitting coach Blake Doyle, bench coach Tom Runnells, catching/defensive positioning coach Rene Lachemann and first base coach Eric Young.

With his contract expired, Weiss stepped down after the season. The Rockies finished 75-87, their best record since 2010.

The team plans to interview external candidates in addition to internal ones such as Glenallen Hill, who finished up his fourth season as manager of the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate.

Tebow aids ill fan after 1st Arizona Fall League game

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Tim Tebow comforted a fan who was having a seizure after the former NFL quarterback played his first baseball game in the Arizona Fall League.

The Phoenix Fire Department said a man in his 40s was having a seizure Tuesday at Camelback Ranch, the spring training home to two major league teams.

Tebow, recently signed by the New York Mets to a minor league contract, went 0 for 3 and also ran into an outfield wall chasing a flyball for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Pictures showed Tebow put his hand on the fan’s leg, and azcentral said the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner at Florida prayed and talked to the man about Georgia football.

Green scores again, U.S. settles for 1-1 draw

WASHINGTON – Julian Green scored his second goal in two matches, before Monty Patterson’s equalizer forced the United States to settle for a 1-1 draw in an exhibition against New Zealand on Tuesday night.

Lynden Gooch made his U.S. debut as a second-half substitute in a match played exactly a month before the Americans face Mexico to open their final round of World Cup qualifying.

Goalkeeper William Yarbrough kept New Zealand scoreless over 45 minutes in his first international start and third overall appearance.

David Bingham couldn’t do the same in the second half, though he could hardly be blamed for Patterson’s strike.

After U.S. forward Jozy Altidore failed to clear a corner kick aimed at New Zealand’s Michael Boxhall, Patterson popped up to thump the loose ball into the net from about 5 yards out.

Klinsmann insists he was not jockeying for U.S. job

WASHINGTON – Jurgen Klinsmann rejected Bob Bradley’s claims the former German star angled in 2010 to succeed him as U.S. coach.

Bradley was fired soon after a 4-2 loss to Mexico in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final and replaced by Klinsmann, a former German national team star player and coach. Bradley made the claim Friday when he was introduced as Swansea, the first American head coach in England’s Premier League.

Klinsmann said Monday ahead of his team’s exhibition against New Zealand. “it’s simply not true.”
