Encarnacion suspended 1 game for bumping ump

TORONTO (AP) – Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion is suspended one game for making contact with umpire Vic Carapazza during an argument Friday.

Encarnacion, who leads baseball with 73 RBIs, is eligible to play while he appeals the penalty.

Encarnacion was ejected for the first time this season for arguing with Carapazza after being called out on strikes to end the first inning of Friday’s 19-inning, 2-1 loss to Cleveland. Encarnacion made contact with Carapazza’s left shoulder after being ejected.

Manager John Gibbons came out to break up the argument and was also ejected.

D-backs place Greinke on 15-day Disabled List

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Zack Greinke on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

The move is retroactive to last Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks ace left Tuesday night’s game against Philadelphia after two innings. The injury came after Greinke hit a sacrifice fly.

Signed to a six-year, $206.5 million contract in the offseason, Greinke is 10-3 with a 3.62 ERA with Arizona. He had won seven of eight starts with a 2.18 ERA before last Tuesday’s outing.

OJ Brigance to pay tribute to Lou Gehrig

BALTIMORE – Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker O.J. Brigance will take his personal fight against ALS to the baseball diamond on the 77th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.

Brigance has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Soon after Brigance was diagnosed in 2007, he and his wife, Chanda, launched a campaign to help other people with ALS.

Gehrig died two years after declaring himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth” in his 1939 speech. Brigance will honor the former Yankees first baseman by participating in the traditional first-pitch ceremony Monday night at the home of the Class A Aberdeen IronBirds.

Indians Almonte returns from 80-game suspension

TORONTO – Cleveland Indians outfielder Abraham Almonte will make his season debut against the Blue Jays on Sunday after being reinstated from the restricted list.

Almonte was suspended in February for 80 games after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance. MLB said Almonte tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic steroid generally used by veterinarians on horses.

Almonte played 51 games for Cleveland last season, hitting .264 with five home runs and 20 RBIs. He is starting in center field and batting eighth against Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ.

Ginobili says he will be back for another season

BAHIA BLANCA, Argentina – Manu Ginobili is coming back for a 15th season in the NBA.

Ginobili made the announcement on his personal blog Sunday. He turns 39 this month and declared himself a free agent last month after declining a player option for 2016-17 with the San Antonio Spurs.

Ginobili didn’t say if he would be back in San Antonio, though it has been widely presumed that if he continued playing, he would stay with the Spurs. He did say that he would have more news to share soon.
