Beating of dog lands a Baylor Bear on the bench

WACO, Texas – Baylor sophomore receiver Ishmael Zamora was suspended for the first three games of the season after a video surfaced of him beating his dog with a belt this summer.

Zamora in a statement Tuesday apologized for his actions, saying he was sorry that he took out his frustrations on his dog.

Waco police charged Zamora with a misdemeanor in the animal abuse case. The receiver will also have also perform 40 community service hours in a manner that will teach him kindness and respect toward animals, undergo counseling and give the dog to an animal-friendly home.

Vikings season sinks, as Bridgewater goes down

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a dislocated left knee and complete tear to his ACL in a freak practice injury.

Bridgewater was taken from the practice field Tuesday in an ambulance to a local hospital. The injury to one of the team’s most popular players left a franchise that entered the season with designs on a Super Bowl run shaken to the core.

Head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman says Bridgewater also suffered other structural damage to his knee, but there appears to be no nerve or arterial damage.

Sugarman says Bridgewater is expected to make a full recovery after a “significant” rehabilitation. He will have surgery in the coming days.

Svindal says knee injury could put career in doubt

OSLO, Norway – Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal says the knee injury that took him out of the World Cup last season was worse than he’s been letting on.

Svindal was the overall World Cup leader when he injured his right knee in a crash during a downhill Jan. 23 in Kitzbuehel.

Svindal is back on skis training for the upcoming World Cup season. But he said the cartilage problems are particularly worrisome and could put the season, and even his career, at risk.

Flying Solo: Goalkeeper ends season with Reign

Goalkeeper Hope Solo decided to end her season with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The beleaguered goalkeeper, who was handed a six-month suspension and saw her contract with U.S. Soccer terminated last week, announced her departure from her professional club team in a statement Tuesday.

U.S. Soccer suspended Solo following disparaging comments she made about Sweden during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, calling her opponents a “bunch of cowards” for their defensive style of play during the quarterfinals.

Lochte on ‘Dancing’: Out of the pool, into the ballroom

NEW YORK – Sure, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte made up an incident in Rio de Janeiro and is facing charges from Brazilian police that he filed a false robbery report and is losing sponsors who think his image has been tarnished.

Now he aims to dance away the heartache. Despite his current woes, Lochte was named Tuesday as a contestant on the upcoming edition of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

He joins other celebrities in the “DWTS” ballroom including former Texas Governor Rick Perry, “Brady Bunch” star Maureen McCormick, recording artists Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds,” Jana Kramer and Vanilla Ice, Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez, NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Jr., actress Marilu Henner, race car driver James Hinchcliffe, and “Little Women: LA” star Terra Jole.
