Barry Bonds being let go as Marlins’ hitting coach

MIAMI – Barry Bonds played 22 seasons in the major leagues during which he became MLB’s all-time leader in home runs and walks, but he lasted just one season as the Miami Marlins’ hitting coach. The team is parting ways with him, according to Knuckleball’s Jon Heyman.

Craig Mish, a SiriusXM sports-radio host based out of South Florida, reported that Marlins Manager Don Mattingly “called out” Bonds during a road trip this summer, allegedly because the latter’s “commitment level dwindled.” Mish added that Giancarlo Stanton “tuned out” Bonds, who had been “openly critical” of the Miami slugger.

McGwire, Selig, Steinbrenner on new HOF ballot

NEW YORK – Mark McGwire is getting another swing at the Hall of Fame.

The former slugger who admitted using steroids joins Bud Selig, George Steinbrenner and seven others on the Today’s Game Era ballot to be considered for election to Cooperstown in December.

The ballot is part of changes to the election process announced by the Hall’s board of directors in July. It includes five players, three executives and two managers who made their biggest impact from 1988 on.

Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Lou Piniella and John Schuerholz round out the class of 2017 candidates on the new ballot.

White Sox promote Renteria to replace Robin Ventura

CHICAGO – Rick Renteria is getting a second chance to manage in Chicago – this time on the South Side.

The White Sox promoted Renteria from bench coach to replace Robin Ventura on Monday, hoping he can help turn around a struggling franchise.

The 54-year-old Renteria takes over a team with one playoff appearance since the 2005 championship year. And he gets a second chance after the Cubs unceremoniously let him go after the 2014 season so they could hire Joe Maddon.

Ventura announced Sunday after the final game against Minnesota that he would not return, insisting the decision was his and he wasn’t pushed out despite five seasons.

Vikings deny Beckham, mystify Manning in win

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota’s defense denied Odell Beckham Jr. all night and forced two turnovers that led to 10 points, and the Vikings mystified Eli Manning yet again during a 24-10 victory Monday over the New York Giants.

Sam Bradford threw a touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Rudolph for the third straight game and kept his turnover-free streak intact, helping the Vikings lead from start to finish after falling behind in each of their first three wins.

Beckham was smothered by cornerback Xavier Rhodes and had 23 yards on three catches. Manning was erratic as ever while finishing 25 for 45 for just 261 yards. Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon each ran for a touchdown as the Vikings rushed for a season-high 104 yards.
