Rosberg beats ’mate, rival to win Monaco Grand Prix

MONACO – Nico Rosberg won the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position Sunday to take the overall championship lead from his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished second to give Mercedes a fifth consecutive 1-2 finish.

The German driver clinched his second victory of the season and fifth of his career, making a strong start and holding off Hamilton to repeat his maiden GP win from pole here in Monaco last year.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo clinched his second consecutive third-place finish, while four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel’s frustrating season with Red Bull continued as he abandoned early with a power unit failure.

Aru wins a difficult Stage 15 to cut into Uran’s Giro lead

MONTECAMPIONE, Italy – Fabio Aru of Italy claimed a solo victory on the tough uphill finish to Montecampione in the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday for his first Grand Tour victory.

Aru made his move with 1.55 miles remaining and finished 21 seconds ahead of Fabio Duarte. Nairo Quintana edged out Pierre Rolland for third place, 22 seconds behind.

The 23-year-old Aru also cut into Rigoberto Uran’s overall lead and now is fourth – 2 minutes, 24 seconds behind the Colombian. Uran extended his advantage over his closest challengers and is 1:03 ahead of Cadel Evans and 1:50 ahead of Rafal Majka.

Scott wins Colonial in OT; McIlroy wins the BMW

FORT WORTH, Texas – Adam Scott made a 7-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff Sunday to end his first week as the world’s No. 1 player with a victory at Colonial.

Jason Dufner, who made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18 in regulation, slid a 40-footer past when he and Scott played the 18th hole for the second time during the playoff. Scott then made the 7-footer for his 11th PGA Tour victory.

Scott and Dufner both shot 4-under 66 to finish at 9 under, the highest winning score at Colonial since 1999.

VIRGINIA WATER, England – Rory McIlroy won the European Tour’s flagship BMW PGA Championship on Sunday.

The double major winner came from seven shots back at the start of the final round to shoot a 6-under 66 and win by 1 stroke with an overall 14-under 274 on the Wentworth course.

It was McIlroy’s first European Tour success since December 2012 and ends a run of eight second-place finishes in 11 events this season.

MOBILE, Ala. – Jessica Korda won the Airbus LPGA Classic on Sunday for her second victory of the year, birdieing four of the last five holes to break out of a tight pack.

Korda made a breaking 15-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke victory over Anna Nordqvist.

Korda played the back nine in 6-under 30 to finish at 20-under 268 on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Magnolia Grove complex.

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Colin Montgomerie won the Senior PGA Championship on Sunday, finishing with a 6-under 65 for a four-stroke victory over 64-year-old Tom Watson.

It marked Montgomerie’s first victory as a senior. The 51-year-old Scot finished at 13-under 261 at Harbor Shores.

Russia leans on its stars to win ice hockey worlds

MINSK, Belarus – Star forwards Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin scored eight minutes apart to lead Russia to a 5-2 victory over Finland in the final of the ice hockey world championships Sunday for its second title in three years.

Danis Zaripov also scored a goal and added two assists.

With the victory, Russia avenged a loss to Finland in the quarterfinals in the Sochi Olympics and earned its fifth gold since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.
