Aru still grips Vuelta overall lead entering mountains
TARAZONA, Spain – Nelson Oliveira of Portugal sped away to win the 13th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Friday, while Fabio Aru kept his lead before the Grand Tour enters three consecutive days in the mountains.
Oliveira broke free from an escape group of 24 riders with around 12 miles to go on the hilly 110-mile ride from Calatayud to Tarazona. The Lampre-Merida rider had time to slow down, zip up his maillot, and bow to the crowd as he crossed a minute ahead of the chasing pack.
Aru finished in the peloton with the remaining main rivals following the expulsion of Astana teammate Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome’s withdrawal because of a broken foot.
Spain’s Joaquim Rodriguez remained in second place at 27 seconds behind the Italian leader.

Day and Spieth headed on different FedEx Cup paths
NORTON, Mass. – Luke Donald took a big step toward advancing to the next FedEx Cup playoff event in Chicago. Jason Day took a small step toward No. 1 in the world.
As for Jordan Spieth? He took another step in the wrong direction.
Donald advanced to the second playoff event at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then he managed blustery conditions at the TPC Boston on Friday for a 4-under 67 and a share of the lead with Colt Knost among the early starters.
Day needs to win to reach No. 1 in the world, and he opened with three consecutive birdies. The wind kept him at bay and he wound up with a 68.
Spieth opened with a 75, his third consecutive round over par. Rory McIlroy shot a 70.

England’s Lee Slattery is second after shooting 67, including five birdies on the back nine.

Innings limit shouldn’t stop the Mets’ Dark Knight
MIAMI – The New York Mets said they expect right-hander Matt Harvey to make four more starts during the regular season and assume a “reasonable workload” during the playoffs.
Harvey missed last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, and his health came into question after he became dehydrated during his latest start Wednesday. He is 12-7 with a 2.60 earned-run average and has thrown 166 1/3 innings for the NL East leaders, and there are no plans to shut him down at any point, assistant general manager John Ricco said Friday.

Ealges ship Barkley, which clears the way for Tebow
PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Eagles traded quarterback Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals, clearing a roster spot for Tim Tebow.
Arizona sent a conditional seventh-round draft pick to Philadelphia for Barkley. He’ll provide depth behind Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton. Logan Thomas and rookie Phillip Sims were competing for the No. 3 job.
Tebow outplayed Barkley in the preseason and appears to have locked up the No. 3 job behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.
Tebow signed with the Eagles in March. He last played in the regular season in 2012 with the New York Jets.
