No party like a Miami party: Heat celebrate another title
MIAMI – Chris Bosh held the NBA championship trophy, LeBron James stood atop a double-decker bus with a cigar in his mouth, and Chris Andersen flapped his arms in a nod to his “Birdman” moniker.
The NBA champion Miami Heat were in quite a mood to party on Monday.
Players, families, staff members and friends crammed buses, flatbed trucks and cars for the parade honoring the latest Heat championship, with the caravan snaking its way through downtown Miami before a huge crowd of fans. A crowd of up to 400,000 was expected on a hot, steamy morning where the heat index reached the mid-90s by 11 a.m. Eastern time.
Several players held super-soaker squirt guns and sprayed water on fans below, confetti blew through the air and dotted the streets, and bands blared as the team rolled past with horns honking. Heat managing general partner Micky Arison and team president Pat Riley stood in the front of one bus, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra – his championship cap turned backward – waved and clapped at fans, and Dwyane Wade pointed at people along the route.

Plutko pitches Bruins to 1-0 series lead over Bulldogs
OMAHA, Neb. – Adam Plutko limited Mississippi State to a run on four hits in six innings, and UCLA survived some anxious moments to beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in Game 1 of the College World Series finals Monday night.
Plutko retired nine in a row to start, worked out of trouble twice and turned the game over to the bullpen in the seventh. The Bulldogs (51-19) left runners in scoring position four of the last six innings.
The Bruins (48-17) are one win from their first national championship in baseball. Mississippi State must win Game 2 tonight to keep alive its hopes for its first NCAA title in any sport.
UCLA made it 3-0 in the fourth on Eric Filia’s two-out single off Chad Girodo, who replaced starter Trevor Fitts (0-1) in the second. That was the last of the Bruins’ six hits.
Plutko (10-3) walked in the Bulldogs’ run in the fourth.

Police continue to search near Hernandez’s home
NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. – Police again searched the area near the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, a week after his friend’s body was found about a mile away.
Some police officers wore wetsuits Monday while searching woods near Hernandez’s home, not far from the industrial park where Odin Lloyd’s body was found.
Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player for the Boston Bandits, was found slain June 17. His relatives said he was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, that the two men were friends and that both men were out together on the last night of Lloyd’s life.
An Attleboro District Court official said no new documents were available in connection with the case Monday morning. The Bristol County district attorney’s office also didn’t release any new information about the case, which their spokeswoman called “an active, ongoing investigation.”
Hall of Famer Kelly says no chemo, radiation needed
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly says he has been told by doctors that he won’t need to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment after having surgery to remove cancerous cells in his jaw.
The former Buffalo Bills star made the announcement at his football camp in Buffalo on Monday and his comments were posted on the Bills’ website.
Kelly says he found out the news on Wednesday.
He says he had the left side of his jaw and the teeth on that side of his mouth removed in surgery on June 7. He was released from the hospital three days later.
He said he’s scheduled for a follow-up with doctors in two months to see if the cancer stays away.
