Associated Press All-Pac-12 football team

PHOENIX — Washington receiver John Ross is the player of the year on The Associated Press All-Pac-12 team announced on Friday and two players shared defensive honors.

Utah defensive end Hunter Dimick and multi-dimensional USC cornerback Adoree’ Jackson shared defensive player of the year.

Colorado’s Mike MacIntyre was the coach of the year after leading a massive turnaround in Boulder and Southern California quarterback Sam Darnold was a unanimous choice as newcomer of the year.

Washington led the first team with six players, including Budda Baker, a unanimous choice at safety. The No. 4 Huskies won the Pac-12 championship and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff, facing top-ranked Alabama in the Peach Bowl.

Fowler gets $82.5 million, 5-year deal with Cardinals

ST. LOUIS — Dexter Fowler is headed from the World Series champions to their biggest rival.

After helping the Chicago Cubs end their long championship drought, he finalized an $82.5 million, five-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Fowler fills the last big hole left in the Cardinals lineup after moves made earlier in the offseason to shore up the bullpen.

Fowler was also a free agent a year ago, when he spurned a $33 million, three-year offer from Baltimore, who refused to offer an opt out after one year, and signed a $13 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. He hit .276 with 13 homers and a career-best .393 on-base percentage that landed him in his first All-Star Game, then had a pair of home runs in helping the Cubs win their first World Series title in 108 years.

World Series trophy going on multi-state road trip

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs’ World Series trophy is hitting the road.

In a news release, the team announced that the tour that will begin at Cubs Team Store on Michigan Avenue on Dec. 9 and at City Hall on Dec. 15. After that, the trophy will make stops throughout Illinois.

The trophy will visit South Bend, Indiana, as well as Des Moines and other Iowa communities. It will also be taken to Mesa, Arizona for spring training.

83 potential suspects in soccer abuse probe

LONDON — Police overseeing the sex abuse scandal in British soccer say 83 potential suspects have been identified and linked to 98 clubs.

Officers across the country are sifting through 639 referrals received by both police and a helpline established last month when former players started going public to say they were abused by coaches while in youth teams.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said in a statement on Friday that the age range of potential victims was 7 to 20.

The NPCC says 98 clubs have been “impacted” but added that this does not equate to them all being “under investigation.”

The NPCC says the unidentified clubs are from across all levels of the English game “from premier clubs through to amateur.”

Denver’s dream season ends in NCAA semifinal

HOUSTON — Ian Harkes scored in the 102nd minute and Wake Forest outlasted Denver 2-1 in double overtime Friday to advance to the College Cup title game.

Wake Forest (19-3-2) will face the Stanford-North Carolina winner in the championship Sunday. The Demon Deacons reached the championship game for the first time since winning the 2007 title.

The Demon Deacons dominated game after halftime, firing 14 shots to Denver’s two.
