LOUDON, N.H. – Carl Edwards turned a lap of 135.453 mph to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Edwards took the top spot Friday for the third time in the last four New Hampshire races and won his sixth pole of the season.
Edwards led the way for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship drivers. Martin Truex Jr. followed his Chase win at Chicagoland Speedway with a solid qualifying run to join Edwards on the front row.
Ryan Newman will start third, followed by Chase drivers Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Jamie McMurray, and Matt Kenseth.
Chase drivers Chris Buescher and Austin Dillon failed to advance out of the first round of qualifying. Fellow Chase drivers Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart failed to get out of the second round.

ATLANTA – Dustin Johnson powered his way down the fairways and occasionally out of the brutal rough for a 3-under 67 to take a one-shot lead at the Tour Championship and move closer to the $10 million FedEx Cup prize.
If nothing else, Johnson all but eliminated anyone not among the top five trying to win the FedEx Cup. Jason Day took himself out of the mix by withdrawing because of more back issues.
Johnson took the lead with two birdies to start the back nine and finished at 7-under 133, one shot ahead of Kevin Chappell (68).
Chappell already has three runner-up finishes this season and now has to face the best player in golf at the moment.
Kevin Kisner (70) and Hideki Matsuyama (71) were four shots back.
BAD GRIESBACH, Germany – Frenchman Alexander Levy set a course record and opened up a six-shot lead before fading light shortened the second round of the European Open on Friday.
Levy will have to complete his round on the ninth hole on Saturday. Half the field will go out early Saturday for the second round, before the third round can start. Morning fog delayed start of play on both days so far.
Levy shot a 9-under in the morning for a course-record 62 as he completed the first round and was at 17-under when play was halted in the evening.
He made 17 birdies in 35 holes to open up a commanding lead over German Martin Kaymer, who also has one hole to play.
Robert Karlsson of Sweden and Englishman Ross Fisher, his playing partner, were also at 11-under – with three holes left to complete.
Levy has missed action with a wrist injury this summer but has been in good form since his return in early September. He finished in a tie for seventh at last week’s Italian Open and is seeking his third European Tour title and first since the 2014 Portugal Masters.

MIAMI – A person with knowledge of the situation says Chris Bosh failed his physical, meaning the Miami Heat will not clear him for training camp next week and casting serious doubt on his playing future.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because neither Bosh nor the team has announced the result. It’s a major setback for the 11-time All-Star forward, who wants to resume playing even though each of his last two seasons was cut short by blood clots.
Bosh was examined by multiple doctors in recent days in an attempt to be cleared for camp, which beings next week.
