Mayweather Jr. sued over $1.4M jewelry debt

LAS VEGAS — Retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is accused of stiffing a Las Vegas jewelry company for $1.4 million of the cost of a diamond-encrusted necklace he bought the weekend after his last fight, according to a lawsuit filed in Nevada state court.

It wasn’t immediately clear Tuesday if Mayweather or his legal representatives had been served with the civil lawsuit, filed Sept. 23 in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas.

Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe and Mark Tratos, an attorney in Las Vegas who represents Mayweather in civil cases, didn’t immediately respond to messages.

Radio station drops game over anthem protest

A North Carolina radio station is dropping the broadcast of East Carolina’s upcoming football game in reaction to last weekend’s protest staged by members of the school’s marching band.

WFAY-AM in Fayetteville announced Tuesday that it would not carry the Pirates’ game at South Florida scheduled for Saturday. The move comes after the school said 19 band members kneeled during the anthem before the game against Central Florida to protest racial injustice and police brutality. Band officials issued an apology Monday.

Former Raiders QB facing new drug charges

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Former USC and Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich is facing new drug charges after he allegedly was seen trying to enter a stranger’s home naked.

Prosecutors filed misdemeanor charges Tuesday accusing the 47-year-old Irvine resident of trespassing, public nudity and possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He could face up to three years in jail if convicted.

Authorities say a naked Marinovich tried to open the sliding glass door of an Irvine home in August. He allegedly left a bag containing meth, marijuana, drug gear, his wallet and driver’s license on a nearby hiking trail.

Sharapova’s ban cut from 2 years to 15 months

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The highest court in sports has cut Maria Sharapova’s two-year doping ban to 15 months.

The decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport means the Russian tennis star will be able to return to competition in April, in time for the French Open.

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1-ranked player, tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January and received a two-year ban from the International Tennis Federation.

She appealed to CAS in June.

The arbitration panel says she “bore some degree of fault” for the positive test “for which a sanction of 15 months is appropriate.”

Her ban took effect on Jan. 26.
