League to review concussion protocol on Miami QB

MIAMI – The NFL and NFL Players Association have begun a review of the concussion protocol conducted on Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore when he left his team’s playoff game at Pittsburgh after being shaken up.

The review doesn’t mean the NFL has drawn conclusions as to whether the protocol was followed, the league said in a statement Monday. Moore was hurt when hit as he threw a pass Sunday, and the play drew a roughing the passer penalty on Pittsburgh’s Bud Dupree.

Dolphins medical staff attended to Moore on the field, and he was evaluated on the sideline by an unaffiliated neurological consultant and team physician before returning to the game after missing one play.

Steelers coach accused of assault hours after win

PITTSBURGH – Former Pro Bowl linebacker and current Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter was charged early Monday with assaulting a doorman at a bar and a police officer who intervened hours after the team’s wild card win over the Miami Dolphins.

The altercation happened at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, following the Steelers’ 30-12 home victory over the Dolphins in the opening round of the NFL playoffs. Pittsburgh placed Porter on leave during a review.

According to a complaint, Officer Paul Abel was working security at another nearby bar when he was told by an off-duty officer that the doorman at The Flats on Carson Street was being threatened by a Steeler.

Abel, the 5-foot-6, 145-pound officer who filed the complaint, said Porter, 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, ignored him when he asked what was going on and grabbed him by the arms and lifted him off the ground.

Porter was charged with aggravated assault on the officer, simple assault on the doorman, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, defiant trespass and public drunkenness.

Jaguars hire Doug Marrone as new head coach

A person familiar with the search says the Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Doug Marrone as head coach and brought back Tom Coughlin in an executive role.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not confirmed the hiring. ESPN first reported Marrone had been chosen to replace Gus Bradley, who was fired in late November after going 14-48 in three-plus seasons.

The Jaguars (3-13) also gave general manager Dave Caldwell a two-year contract extension, the person said.

Coughlin, who was Jacksonville’s first coach and won two Super Bowls in eight seasons with the New York Giants, will serve as executive vice president of football operations.

Marrone, who also interviewed with Los Angeles and San Francisco, served as Jacksonville’s interim coach for the final two games.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Carli Lloyd win FIFA best player award

ZURICH — Cristiano Ronaldo received FIFA’s best player award for the fourth time on Monday, after Portugal and Real Madrid won both major European titles in 2016.

Ronaldo got 34.54 percent of total voting points in a 23-candidate ballot. Lionel Messi received 26.42 percent. Voting was by national team captains and coaches, selected media, and fans online. Ronaldo’s fourth FIFA award closed the gap on five-time winner Messi, the runner-up to each Ronaldo victory, who did not attend the ceremony.

Like Ronaldo, Carli Lloyd of the United States won a FIFA player prize for the second year in a row.

Lloyd won despite Germany midfielder Melanie Behringer playing on the Olympic gold medal-winning team. Five-time winner Marta was runner-up and Behringer was third.
