Broncos will be without defensive end Wolfe vs. Chiefs
ENGLEWOOD – Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has been ruled out of Denver’s game at Kansas City with a mysterious illness after getting sick on the team’s bus ride to the airport Friday.
Wolfe was transported to a Denver hospital by ambulance. The Broncos said Saturday that the defensive end was “continuing to be evaluated by doctors to determine the cause of his symptoms.”
Wolfe is the second defensive starter who needed emergency medical attention in the last two weeks.
On Nov. 18, safety Rahim Moore underwent surgery to staunch bleeding in the muscle sheath in his lower left leg, a condition known as lateral compartment syndrome that can cost patients a limb or even their life.
Wolfe has had a tough year. He was whisked from the field in an ambulance in a preseason game at Seattle after a hit to his head and neck, then missed more than a week of practice. In September, he had a bout of food poisoning that led to problems keeping his weight up.

Gut sweeps first two in a weekend trip to Beaver Creek
BEAVER CREEK – Lara Gut of Switzerland won a second consecutive World Cup race, edging a strong Austrian contingent in the super-G on Saturday.
Gut turned in another blazing run on the new Beaver Creek course, finishing in 1 minute, 18.42 seconds. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria originally took second but was disqualified for improper ski equipment, bumping up teammates Anna Fenninger and Nicole Hosp to second and third.
Goergl’s ski width in front of her binding was too wide.
Gut had the course figured out, winning the downhill Friday. She goes for a Beaver Creek sweep Sunday in giant slalom.
It was another rough day for the Americans, with Leanne Smith turning in the best finish at 23rd. The squad was without Lindsey Vonn, who skipped the event to rest her right knee after a recent training crash. And their other star, Julia Mancuso, just couldn’t find the right line, finishing in 29th place.
Italy’s Paris loves the look of the slopes at Lake Louise
LAKE LOUISE, Alberta – Dominik Paris of Italy won the season-opening World Cup men’s downhill in Lake Louise on Saturday.
Klaus Kroell of Austria finished second and Adrien Theaux of France was third.
Erik Guay of Canada finished eighth. He finished 1.08 seconds back of Paris, whose World Cup victory was the third of his career but first in Lake Louise.
The men race a super-G on Sunday before heading to Beaver Creek, Colo., and the second stop on the circuit this season.

Will Brazil’s venues be ready in time for the World Cup?
SAO PAULO – Even before a crane dramatically collapsed and killed two workers at the Sao Paulo stadium, it was clear World Cup organizers would have their hands full trying to deliver all 12 venues by FIFA’s end-of-December deadline.
The giant crane buckled when hoisting a 500-ton metal structure that came crushing on top of the stadium, clipping part of the roof and cutting through a huge LED panel that runs across the venue’s outer facade.
But as bad as the tragedy was at the Arena Corinthians, Sao Paulo is not the only problem for World Cup organizers just weeks before all stadiums must be delivered.
Actually, work in Sao Paulo was almost finished when the accident happened. It was one of the most advanced venues among the six that must be delivered this year.
The story is different in Curitiba, Cuiaba and the jungle city of Manaus, where there are signs they might not make it in time despite claims by local organizers that all three venues will be ready as expected.
FIFA said it will have a better idea of what will be delivered next week, just ahead of Friday’s World Cup draw in Costa do Sauipe.
