Bohn’s big buyout of $918K includes CU season tickets

BOULDER – Mike Bohn has a prime seat to watch his replacement: The University of Colorado not only will pay the athletic director $918,000 after his resignation but also will give him season tickets to various Buffaloes sporting events for life.

The funds for Bohn’s payout will come out of athletic department revenues not from taxpayer dollars or tuition, chancellor Philip DiStefano reiterated at a news conference Wednesday.

Bohn, who grew up in Boulder, submitted his resignation Tuesday after eight years in charge of the athletic program. The reasons for his resignation were not disclosed, and DiStefano didn’t shed any new light on the situation in a rather brief news conference held on campus.

Gary Miller is the new voice of the Colorado State Rams

FORT COLLINS – Veteran Denver television sportscaster Gary Miller is the new radio play-by-play voice of the Colorado State Rams.

Miller will call CSU’s football and men’s basketball games on the Colorado State Radio Network beginning this fall. He will be joined in the booth by color commentator Brian Roth, who has had a 13-year association with the school on the airwaves.

Miller handled play-by-play duties for Denver Broncos preseason games from 2004 to 2010 and also called University of Colorado men’s and women’s basketball games in the 1990s.

Broncos recharge secondary with another from San Diego

ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos signed free agent cornerback Quentin Jammer after striking out in their pursuit of safety Charles Woodson.

A physical and durable 12th-year pro, Jammer is the third longtime San Diego Chargers player to bolt for their AFC rivals this offseason, joining linebacker Shaun Phillips and right guard Louis Vasquez.

Jammer spent his first 11 seasons in San Diego, where he had 21 interceptions and 130 pass breakups. He was the fifth-overall draft pick in 2002 out of Texas, where he played safety.

Since becoming a starter in 2003, he’s missed just three starts, opening 157 games, most by a cornerback in the NFL during that span.

Woodson, who said the Raiders’ offer was better than the Broncos, signed with Oakland last week.

Rangers fire Tortorella after another postseason flop

NEW YORK – John Tortorella was defiant in stating the New York Rangers didn’t take a step back when they were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round.

General manager Glen Sather thought otherwise and fired the combative coach Wednesday. Tortorella unexpectedly was dismissed with one year left on his contract.

In 319 regular-season games with New York, Tortorella went 171-118-1-29.

Belgium rips U.S. defense in a 4-2 international friendly

CLEVELAND – Christian Benteke scored two goals in the second half, and Marouane Fellaini had another, leading Belgium to a 4-2 thrashing of the United States on Wednesday night in an international friendly the Americans hoped would get them ready for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Boasting a strong roster with 10 players from the English Premier League, Belgium broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in the second half. It overpowered a U.S. team that has some work to do on defense before it can even think about making the field for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Benteke, who plays for Aston Villa, scored in the 56th and 71st minutes for Belgium, ranked 15th in the world and considered a rising European power.

Geoff Cameron scored in the 22nd minute, and Clint Dempsey scored a penalty kick in the 80th minute for the U.S.
