NASCAR returns to Mexico for 2017 with new sponsor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR will resurrect its series in Mexico behind new title sponsor PEAK, an automotive products company seeking to boost its profile.

The rebranded NASCAR PEAK Mexico Series will mark its return with an exhibition race in Mexico City in December. The series plans to run a full championship schedule next year.

Lou Garate, vice president of partnership marketing for NASCAR, believes the return of the series in Mexico will bolster the popularity of stock car racing and provide opportunities for aspiring drivers and crew members.

Curt Schilling eyes Senate run against Elizabeth Warren

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling says he’ll run against Elizabeth Warren in the U.S. Senate if his wife agrees, and that he’s ultimately responsible for the collapse of his video game company in Rhode Island, though he didn’t apologize to taxpayers left on the hook for tens of millions of dollars.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo has said Rhode Island residents were hurt by the bad deal and deserve an apology.

The company moved from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 2010 in exchange for a $75 million loan guarantee, then went bankrupt.

Schilling asked listeners: “What do you want me to apologize for?”

He says his company failed because it didn’t raise enough money, not because he did anything malicious or illegal.

Chiefs ship RB Davis to Packers for draft pick

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have traded backup running back Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers for a conditional draft pick.

The Packers were desperate for running back depth with Eddie Lacy nursing a bothersome ankle and James Starks undergoing knee surgery. Lacy was their only active running back against Dallas on Sunday.

Davis had been passed over by Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West on the Chiefs’ depth chart, and the return of Jamaal Charles from his knee injury made him expendable.

NFL’s ‘Medical Timeout’ used 7 times since start of 2015

Independent medical observers stopped five NFL games in 2015 and two so far in 2016 — the first two seasons in which the “Medical Timeout” has been employed as a method to identify players with major injuries or possible concussions.

In its 2016 Health and Safety Report , released Tuesday, the NFL said an average of 29 health care providers, including two unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants, attend games. Many of them, along with on-field officials, can rule a player out due to a concussion or other severe injury.

In a new move last season, the NFL stationed athletic trainers in spots high above the field and allowed them to watch replays — and to call time out if they saw injuries that otherwise went unnoticed.

The report offered no new data since preliminary figures released in January accounted for 182 concussions over the 2015 season.
