Hamilton fast in F1 practice, but Rosberg wins the pole
BARCELONA, Spain – Mercedes will start the Spanish Grand Prix from the front row after Nico Rosberg had the fastest qualifying time ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton on Saturday.
While Hamilton had the fastest times in the first two qualifying sessions, Rosberg edged him to win the pole position in 1 minute, 20.718 seconds.
Three-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel will start from third spot for Red Bull ahead of Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus.
After good practice times, Ferrari teammates Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa will start and fifth and sixth, respectively, after slipping in qualifying.
Jenson Button failed to make the cut for the third session, and the Briton will start in 14th place.

Dowsett wins Giro time trial; Nibali takes the overall lead
SALTARA, Italy – Alex Dowsett won the individual time trial in the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday after favorite Bradley Wiggins was slowed by a puncture and only managed second.
Vincenzo Nibali, Wiggins’ main rival for the title, took the overall lead from Benat Intxausti after finishing fourth.
Dowsett won his first Grand Tour stage by finishing the hilly 34.05-mile route from Gabicce Mare to Saltara in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 27 seconds, beating fellow Briton Wiggins by 10 seconds. Tanel Kangert of Estonia was third.
Nibali is nearly half a minute in front of second-place Cadel Evans of Australia. Wiggins moved up to fourth in the overall standings but still is 1:16 behind the Italian.

A Swedish rookie rises up through the stormclouds
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Swedish rookie David Lingmerth emerged from the storm clouds to take the lead Saturday in The Players Championship.
Lingmerth ended a long day at the TPC Sawgrass with an 8-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole and a 10-foot birdie putt on the island-green 17th. That put him at 12-under-par when the round was suspended because of darkness. There was a two-hour delay earlier because of storms.
Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson – all former Players Championship winners – were two shots behind.
Ten players didn’t finish the third round.

Stastny helps USA to a win and first place at worlds
HELSINKI – The United States beat France 4-2 on Saturday to take the lead in its group at the ice hockey world championships.
Stephen Gionta and Bobby Butler gave the Americans a 2-0 lead in the first period, and captain Paul Stastny and David Moss added goals in the third.
Kevin Hecquefeuille made it 2-1 for France in the second period, and Yorick Treille added a late goal.
American goaltender Ben Bishop had 15 saves, including a couple of key stops to keep his team ahead early in the third.
In Stockholm, Switzerland took the lead in the other group with a 4-1 victory over Denmark.

For the first time in 81 years, Wigan wins the FA Cup
LONDON – Wigan won the FA Cup for the first time in its 81-year history, beating big-spending Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday night in one of the biggest final upsets the tournament has seen.
Ben Watson scored on a header off Shaun Maloney’s corner kick in the 90th minute at Wembley Stadium.
Wigan, based near Manchester, put together its roster for less than $30 million, while City’s cost more than 10 times that amount.
