Woods withdraws from Safeway Open

The comeback of Tiger Woods is going to have to wait at least two more months.

Three days before he was to return at the Safeway Open, Woods said he wasn’t ready to return against PGA Tour competition.

He first said on Sept. 7 that he planned to play, then officially committed to the tournament on Friday.

Woods, who had back surgery three times last year, says he feels strong and his health is good. But he says that after several days of practice in California, he feels his game is vulnerable.

He plans to play at his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas the first week of December.

Nationals beat Dodgers to take 2-1 lead in NLDS

LOS ANGELES — Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth homered, and the Washington Nationals moved within one victory of winning a postseason series for the first time, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3 Monday for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five NL playoff.

Four relievers combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings, putting the Nationals in position to wrap up the NL Division Series on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.

Playing 23 hours after the Nationals tied the series at home in a rain-postponed Game 2, Rendon hit a two-run homer in a four-run third that chased Kenta Maeda. Werth added a solo shot off closer Kenley Jansen in a breakaway four-run ninth.

Ravens fire Trestman, Mornhinweg new OC

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens have fired Marc Trestman as offensive coordinator and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg.

Coach John Harbaugh made the move Monday, less than 24 hours after the Ravens managed only one touchdown in a 16-10 loss to Washington.

Operating against the league’s 29th-ranked defense, Baltimore failed to score in the second half after abandoning a running game that worked well before halftime.

Quarterback Joe Flacco said he was “embarrassed” at the way the offense has played this season.

Trestman was in his second season as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator. Last season, the Ravens had the second-most total net yards in team history but went 5-11.

Pens’ Crosby undergoing concussion tests again

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins say superstar Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with a concussion.

The Penguins say Crosby sat out a preseason game Saturday against Columbus because he wasn’t feeling well and missed practice Monday to undergo concussion testing. They added that Crosby’s status will be updated when more information becomes available.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion and reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner missed significant time earlier in his career with concussion problems.

Belgium scores fastest goal in WCup qualifying

BRUSSELS — Belgium scored the fastest goal in World Cup qualifying history when Christian Benteke slotted home against Gibraltar after only seven seconds Monday.

The previous record since detailed timing was kept was held by San Marino’s Davide Gualtieri, who needed 8 seconds to score the opener against England in a 1993 qualifier.

Benteke’s feat came when he robbed the ball immediately after kickoff, drove forward and scored with a cross-goal drive.

Belgium is second in the FIFA rankings while Gibraltar is last.
