Steele rallies to win PGA Tour season opener

NAPA, Calif. — Brendan Steele earned redemption at Silverado and won the Safeway Open for his first PGA Tour victory in more than five years.

Steele rallied from four shots behind in the rain Sunday and finished with three straight birdies for a 7-under 65, giving him a one-shot victory over a faltering Patton Kizzire.

A year ago at Silverado, Steele lost the 54-hole lead by shooting 40 on the back nine.

He two-putted from long range on the par-5 16th, holed an 18-foot birdie on the 17th and then made a 7-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

Noren wins British Masters for 3rd Euro title this year

WATFORD, England — Alex Noren of Sweden held his nerve at the British Masters on Sunday to claim a third European Tour title in his last eight tournaments.

Noren carded a final round of 69 at The Grove to finish on 18-under 266, two shots ahead of Bernd Wiesberger (67), with Lee Westwood (67) a shot further back in third.

Ciganda beats Lee in LPGA Tour playoff

INCHEON, South Korea — Carlota Ciganda beat Alison Lee with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the rainy LPGA KEB HanaBank Championship after each player lost big leads.

The 26-year-old Spaniard won with a 6-foot putt after Lee’s birdie chip from the rough off the back edge of the green missed a half-inch to the right.

Ciganda overcame a five-stroke deficit to Lee on the front nine, then blew a five-stroke lead on the final five holes.

Former player Dennis Byrd killed in car accident

Dennis Byrd was an inspiration for far more than anything he ever accomplished on a football field.

He was able to walk again.

On Saturday, the former NFL defensive lineman whose career was ended by a neck injury was killed in a car accident. He was 50.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Byrd died in a two-vehicle collision on Oklahoma 88 north of Claremore.He starred at Mustang High School outside Oklahoma City and then at the University of Tulsa before playing for the New York Jets.

The Oologah-Talala Emergency Medical Services said the crash happened at about 11 a.m. between Oologah and Claremore. It said a 17-year-old Claremore youth driving a 2000 Ford Explorer northbound on Oklahoma 88 veered into the oncoming lane, striking the 2004 Hummer H2 that Byrd was driving.

Byrd, who had returned to his home in Talala in recent years, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 17-year-old driver and a 12-year-old passenger in Byrd’s vehicle were taken in critical condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

Lynx beat Sparks 85-79, force decisive Game 5

LOS ANGELES — Maya Moore scored 31 points and Minnesota’s defense held Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker in check to help the Lynx beat the Los Angeles Sparks 85-79 on Sunday night and force a decisive fifth game in the WNBA Finals.

Lindsay Whalen added 13 points, Seimone Augustus had 12 and Sylvia Fowles had 10 points and 13 rebounds in tying the series 2-2 and sending it back to Minneapolis, where the Lynx will try to win their record-tying fourth championship on Thursday.

Ogwumike, the league MVP, scored 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting, while two-time MVP Parker shot 4 of 14 for 14 points for the Sparks, who were trying to close out their first title since 2002 in front of their fans at Staples Center.

Chelsea Gray led the Sparks with 20 points off the bench.
