Scully, 85, will return to the Dodgers’ booth in 2014
LOS ANGELES – Hall of Famer Vin Scully, one of baseball’s most beloved broadcasters, will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a record 65th season in 2014.
Scully, 85, said in a statement released Friday that he loves what the new ownership group has brought to the Dodgers and the energy that fans are creating while packing Dodger Stadium.
Other than being home with his family, “there is no place else I’d rather be.”
Scully began his professional baseball broadcasting career in 1950 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and he has called three perfect games, 25 no-hitters, 25 World Series and 12 All-Star games. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.
Braves acquire Freddy Garcia; Athletics make two deals
ATLANTA – The Braves purchased right-hander Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, a move that ultimately could provide depth for a team that holds a commanding lead in the NL East.
The 36-year-old Garcia was 3-5 with a 5.77 earned-run average in 11 appearances for the Orioles before being assigned to Triple-A Norfolk in late June. He made 13 starts for the Tides, going 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA.
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Washington Nationals on Friday to boost their injury situation at the position, bringing back a former fan favorite just more than a year after trading him away.
The A’s are sending Class-A starter Dakota Bacus to the Nationals in the swap, while Washington is paying $995,000 to Oakland as its portion remaining on Suzuki’s 2013 salary.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielder David DeJesus from Washington just four days after the Nationals picked him up from the Chicago Cubs.
Washington will receive a player or cash considerations in the deal announced Friday.

Lawson and his girl will get their day in court in Sept.
CENTENNIAL – An initial hearing in the domestic violence case against Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson is being delayed until September.
Prosecutors asked for the postponement Friday to give them more time to investigate.
Both Lawson and his pregnant girlfriend Ashley Pettiford were arrested after a fight at their home Saturday. Pettiford said she heard Lawson on the phone with another woman and said Lawson pushed her as she packed her things. She’s accused of breaking Lawson’s phone.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson tells KMGH-TV that the conflict “was a mutual situation.” Both were arrested and held over the weekend.

Steelers acquire Felix Jones for their depleted backfield
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers bolstered their injury-plagued backfield Friday, acquiring running back Felix Jones from Philadelphia for linebacker Adrian Robinson.
The deal is pending each player passing a physical.
The 26-year-old Jones gives the Steelers needed depth at running back. Rookie Le’Veon Bell is out with a sprained right foot and is out indefinitely. Isaac Redman is dealing with a nerve injury, and return specialist LaRod Stephens-Howling sat out last Monday’s preseason game against Washington with a sprained knee.
Jones was the 22nd overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys but never stayed healthy enough to become a feature back. He has rushed for 2,728 yards and 11 touchdowns in 64 games.
