Dempsey’s pair makes for happy centennial vs. Germany

WASHINGTON – Clint Dempsey scored twice in the second half and moved into second place on the U.S. career scoring list, helping the Americans beat a second-string Germany team 4-3 in a friendly Sunday.

Preparing for three World Cup qualifiers in a 12-day span beginning Friday, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann watched the Americans take a 4-1 lead and hang on to beat the team he helped win the 1990 World Cup as a player and coached to the 2006 semifinals.

In a game commemorating the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Soccer Federation, Jozy Altidore scored his first international goal in 1½ years. The Americans took a 2-0 first-half lead following an own goal by Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who misjudged a backpass from his own defense.

U.S. women follow Morgan to a victory over Canada

TORONTO – Alex Morgan scored twice, and Sydney Leroux added a goal to lead the United States over Canada 3-0 Sunday in their first meeting since the Americans’ 4-3 overtime win in the semifinals of last year’s Olympic women’s soccer tournament.

Morgan scored for the top-ranked Americans in the 70th minute when she cut inside defender Emily Zurrer and from the top of the penalty area slotted past goalkeeper Erin McLeod. Morgan scored from the same spot two minutes later, her 44th international goal.

Kuchar locks in his first multi-win season of career

DUBLIN, Ohio – Matt Kuchar was in a good spot Sunday at the Memorial. He had his first multiple-win season, and an audience with tournament host Jack Nicklaus.

Needing two putts from 20 feet to hold off a late charge from Kevin Chappell, Kuchar punctuated a remarkably steady final round by making the birdie putt for a 4-under 68 and a two-shot victory at Muirfield Village. He joined Tiger Woods as the only players with more than one win this year on the PGA Tour.

Kuchar, who goes to a career-best No. 4 in the world, won the Match Play Championship in late February.

CHAMPERY, Switzerland – David Veilleux of Canada won the first stage of the Criterium du Dauphine race by nearly two minutes Sunday. Gianni Meersman of Belgium was the runner-up, finishing just ahead of the main pack.

Veilleux won the 75-mile ride around the Swiss Alpine village of Champery in 3 hours, 17 minutes, 35 seconds. Meersman was 1:56 back.

Veilleux formed part of an early breakaway along with France’s Jean-Marc Bideau and Thomas Damuseau and Spain’s Ricardo Garcia Ambroa.

The main pack let them go and they built a lead of more than 10 minutes halfway through the stage. Veilleux made his decisive break 31 miles from the end.

Pagenaud avoids the big one, wins IndyCar race in Detroit

DETROIT – Simon Pagenaud won the crash-filled Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday for his first IndyCar victory.

The Frenchman finished 5.6 seconds in front of James Jakes in the second of two races on the 2.36-mile Belle Isle street course.

The reigning IndyCar Rookie of the Year hadn’t finished better than second.

Mike Conway, who won Saturday’s race with just three cautions, finished third. Scott Dixon was fourth, followed by Dario Franchitti and Marco Andretti, who pulled into a tie with Helio Castroneves for the IndyCar points lead.

AJ Allmendinger was in a pack of cars when he hit a wall on the opening lap, triggering the first of six cautions that stunted about the first half of the race.
