Colorado Mines bags pair of RMAC soccer titles
It took penalty kicks to determine a pair of champions Sunday.
In both cases, Colorado Mines came out on top, as the Orediggers claimed the men’s and women’s soccer Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championships.
The second-seeded men’s team defeated UC-Colorado Springs, the No. 5 seed who beat Fort Lewis College 5-4 in overtime in the first round of the tournament, 4-3 on penalty kicks.
The match was tied 3-3 going into overtime. Mines led 2-0 and 3-1 on goals by Nikolaus Grotz, Joe Hains and Ryan Leach. But the Mountain Lions answered with goals from Josh Berntsson, Conor Langenbahn and Derek Saunier.
The win in Grand Junction gave the Orediggers their fourth RMAC Tournament title and first since 2012.
The women’s game was scoreless through two overtimes, as the nationally ninth-ranked Orediggers battled at home in Golden. The No. 13 Metro State Roadrunners put up a strong fight, but Colorado Mines goalkeeper Jayln Yates made enough saves for the Orediggers to win the penalty kicks 9-8.
It was the fourth consecutive RMAC Tournament title for the Orediggers and fourth overall.
